Heart-Mind Well-Being refers to creating a balance between educating the mind and educating the heart. The focus of most formal education systems is on teaching cognitive skills such as reading, writing and arithmetic. While there is a great focus in our society on academic achievement, a growing body of research demonstrates the positive impacts of social and emotional learning. In fact, research shows that heart and mind learning are highly interconnected, and that improving children's social and emotional skills directly benefits their ability to learn and apply cognitive skills. 

Contemplative Practics

The roots of the tree encompass and transcend differences in the religious traditions from which many of the practices originated, and allow room for the inclusion of new practices that are being created in secular contexts.

The branches represent the different groupings of practices. For example, Stillness Practices focus on quieting the mind and body in order to develop calmness and focus. Generative Practices come in many different forms (i.e. prayers, visualizations, chanting) but share the common intent of generating thoughts and feelings of devotion and compassion, rather than calming and quieting the mind. CMind. Mindful breathing practices such as 4-7-8 breathing can produce what Harvard cardiologist Dr. Herbert Benson called the relaxation response. 

  1. Find a comfortable place to sit with your back straight. 
  2. Place your tongue against the back of your top teeth and keep it there. 
  3. Exhale completely through your mouth around your tongue, making a whoosh sound. Purse your lips if it helps. 
  4. Close your lips and inhale through your nose for a count of four.
  5. Hold your breath for a count of seven.
  6. Exhale completely through your mouth making a whoosh sound for a count of eight. 
  7. This completes one cycle. Repeat for three more cycles.
