Pathways and Journeys . . . ways people grow.
A recent YouthTruth Survey found that about 60% of high school students are engaged. Only 52% said they enjoy coming to school and 48% said what they are learning in school helps them outside of school. The pandemic increased trauma, hopelessness, and dissatisfaction with traditional education, particularly rote one-size-fits-all learning. chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://youthtruthsurvey.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/YouthTruth-Learning-from-Student-Voice-Student-Engagement.pdf
“Americans do not care if all students study the same thing compared to them getting to choose courses based on their individual interests.” “Americans prefer an education system where all students receive the unique supports that they need throughout their learning and all students get whatever amount of time they need to learn a new concept or skill at their own pace. . . prioritizing a K-12 education where all students have the option to choose the courses they want to study based on interests and aspirations.”

Most teens feel unprepared for postsecondary decisions. A recent survey suggests that three-quarters of students feel less than prepared to make college and career decisions. Nearly half of those starting college leave without a credential. This suggests bad-fit decisions and results in the new worst-case scenario of debt without a degree.

More opportunities for some. The loss of traditional jobs during the pandemic and the rise of the platform economy boosted business starts to more than 5 million in 2021 and 2022 (double the rate of 10 years ago). An Adobe survey found that about 45% of Gen Z creators surveyed said they aspire to own a business and make money from content shared online. And, While millennials are experimenting with having a side hustle alongside a day job, “Gen Z is focused more on making a project into a career,” said Maria Yap, Vice President at Adobe. “They’re thinking, no — my regular job could be the thing that I’m passionate about.”

An unbundled system provides more personalized and relevant learning experiences for all students at the learning experience level. When the system can build structures that allow young people to meet competencies and standards in a variety of ways from a variety of sources at the learning experience level, conditions for success increase. In this publication, we articulate the critical steps needed to unbundle the learning ecosystem, build core competencies, design learning experiences, curate new opportunities, and rebundle these experiences into coherent pathways.
Transferable skills (such as communication, collaboration, leadership, and project management) are rarely evaluated, many recognize them as increasingly important for the workplace.
Verified credentials result from a learner demonstrating proficiency around a pre-established set of competencies determined by the issuer. The owner or receiver can make their credentials accessible to any entity wanting to verify the learner’s competencies. Verification means that the credential can be validated by the issuer.

How might we create safe places that equip learners to fully express themselves with confidence? With Support and Guidance, strong advisory systems build purpose, help learners explore careers, build their social capital and skyrockets their potential. Strong Support and Guidance systems are critical for learners to increase their agency and sense of belonging. When Support and Guidance is linked to pathways, learners know where they’re going, how to get there and who can provide support and resources along the way.
If we used to think that learners could navigate school on their own, now we know we have options.
While much of this work requires laying a new foundation in our models ofschool and assessment, pre-existing pathway exemplars do exist that demonstrate some but not all dimensions of the above table.

The #NewPathways campaign is a road map for American schools, where every learner, regardless of zip code, is on a pathway to productive citizenship, high wage employment and economic mobility, and a purpose-driven life.
It will also explore and guide leaders on the big advances of this decade — how access is expanded and personalized, how learning can be guided and supported, and how new capabilities are captured and communicated. When well implemented, these advances will unlock opportunities for all and narrow the equity gap.
how personalized pathways may be the key to launching learners into new and individualized journeys:
11 principles to guide schools as they plan their character education initiative. These include: issues such as core ethical values and their justification, a definition of character, a comprehensive and intentional approach to developing good character, developing the school as a caring community,

(1980) Seymour Papert argues that the computer’s true power as an educational medium lies — in the ability to facilitate and extend children’s awesome natural ability and drive to construct, hypothesize, explore, experiment, evaluate, draw conclusions — in short to learn — all by themselves. It is this very drive, Papert contends, that is squelched by our current educational system.
(2021) A guide for introducing computational thinking into traditional content areas taught across a spectrum of middle and high school classes, including art, English language arts, social studies, and the physical and social sciences. Not all students in the same grade learn in the same way, nor are they alike in their interests, personalities, or hobbies. The key is how the students explain and justify the choices they made.

How can we think about the computer presence in ways that will strengthen rather than weaken the other kind of connection inside the family? . The more interesting and important part — and harder part — to get is more knowledge about learning, about shared intellectual activities. I think that parents are very inhibited by the fact that they are being solicited by vendors of software that promise to prepare the kid for school but which allow very little opportunity for parent and kid to do anything together.
Distance learning via online channels brought a new awareness of diversified ways to teach and to learn and many online implementations found much success during the pandemic. While there were many identified challenges with online learning during this time, there were equal successes, and many schools and districts discovered new benefits of the learning modality.
During this time many students who may have been struggling previous to the pandemic found some success within the new remote modality. Those in need of a new way to learn ultimately found success using online tools and resources and connecting to their teacher online. Once introduced to online learning, some opted to maintain their participation in an online program.

A Look Inside “ASynthesizingMind” by HowardGardner (BookSummary)In the twenty-first century, the most important kind of mind will be thesynthesizing mind.” — Murray Gell-Mann, Nobel Laureate in Physics in1969, the founding genius behind the interdisciplinary Santa Fe Institute, and the coiner of the term “synthesizing mind”
“A human intellectual competence must entail a set of skills of problem solving—enabling the individual to resolve genuine problems or difficulties that he or she encounters, and, when appropriate, to create an effective product—and must entail the potential for finding or creating problems—hereby laying the groundwork for the acquisition of new knowledge.”
In our analysis, nearly half of parents reported they are interested in
alternative school
models. But they also expressed concerns about the cost of these models and their
(perceived) ability to prepare their children for college and/or careers; this latter factor was
generally connected to parents’ lack of awareness regarding the outcomes of alternative
school models. The balance of parents reported they are not interested in alternative school
models. However, our data shows these parents are also largely uninformed about these models, and they cited lack of awareness as the top barrier to any further interest."
Now more than ever, we are reminded how many life lessons can be taught by participating in sports.Life skill development and positive youth development (PYD) is often tied to youth sport. In this post, I will share the research on PYD in sport and provide some strategies for promoting PYD in your context.
Teaching and learning will extend beyond the confines of the classroom, embracing immersive experiences, hands-on projects, and collaborative learning that foster creativity and empathy. Technology will serve as the catalyst for this revolution, with artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and gamification revolutionising the learning experience, while adaptive technologies ensure personalised learning pathways for each student.
Education will transcend borders, connecting learners globally and enabling cross-cultural exchange and collaboration. The future of education holds limitless possibilities, empowering learners to unleash their full potential and embrace a world of knowledge and innovation. As we embark on this journey, let us embrace change, adapt to new methodologies, and revolutionise education for the betterment of future generations. The time for a new educational paradigm is now. https://typeshare.co/edufuturists/posts/where-were-going-we-dont-need-roads
Decades of research have found that there are many factors related to success in postsecondary
education. Student belonging stands out as one factor that all institutions can
proactively cultivate to improve student outcomes.
The Teaching & Learning Lab at Massachusetts Institute of Technology1 writes:
A sense of belonging is ranked third on Maslow’s hierarchy, behind basic
physiological needs and safety. For university students, this need extends to
academic belonging, referring to how socially supported and connected student feel – their sense of how they fit into the larger campus community.
Studies show that belonging impacts several student outcomes, including increased engagement2; academic performance retention, completion rates3;and personal growth and wellbeing4. While, no doubt, building a campus community thatwelcomes and supports all students has a broad impact, the reality of today’s digital anoften remote learning environments makes the task easier said than done.
